Located in Jefferson County in Shades Valley. Although the community roots date back to the 19th century, Homewood was incorporated in September 1926 when attorney Charles Rice started a movement to merge several of the communities surrounding Birmingham. Homewood came into existence with the combination of Edgewood, Rosedale, and Oak grove. Hollywood, a fourth community joined Homewood later. And, in 1959, Homewood voters defeated a move by Birmingham to annex the city.
