Calera Alabama

Calera is located in the southern portion of the County and approximately 30 miles south of Birmingham and positioned along the Interstate 65 corridor.

The City was incorporated on February 21, 1893, and gets its name from a Spanish word meaning limestone. Before its incorporation, the town was known as “Lime Kiln Station,” because of its location in the heart of the vast lime-producing area of the State. This area is one of the largest chemical lime-producing areas in the United States.

Calera is also known as the "Heart of the Heart of Dixie" because of its central location in the great state of Alabama, which offers its residents many of the conveniences of city living - including fine schools, recreational facilities, and shopping - but at a small-town pace.

One of the best know features of Calera is The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum.  The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum is the official state railroad museum of Alabama and features both standard-gauge and narrow-gauge rains, two restored depots, and collections of railroad cars, locomotives, and artifacts.  In addition, the Museum is dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and operation of historically significant railway equipment.  The museum is located at 1919 Ninth Street, Calera, Alabama.

The Calera Downtown Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As well, Calera Presbyterian Church, the Carter Residence, and Cowart Drug Store are also listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.

In April 2011, Calera held its first annual Strawberry Festival, an outreach of the Calera Farmers Market. The festival attracted some 35 vendors and between 1,500-2,000 visitors. The Farmers Market is held June through August on Tuesday afternoons and features fresh local produce.

GOLF

Timberline Golf Course was rated by Golf Week magazine as one of Alabama's Top 10 Courses you can play. Timberline was #9 in 2010 and #8 in 2011-2015.

The designer of Timberline Golf Club’s superb par-71 course that plays at almost 7,000 yards from the tips is none other than Jerry Pate. Pate's ultimate creation is a course that's fun to play, that's meticulously manicured and that rolls gently up and down a beautiful site well shaded by tall timber - the fragrant pines and huge oaks and hardwoods that give the course its name.
